Fun with translation.

Heh. Today was my monthly animefest, and one of the contributions...could've used a little more work. Certain moments thus did not get quite the intended reaction. (Although arguably it was still better than one of the others, which had some decent elements, but seemed unable to decide if it wanted to focus on intrigue, tragedy, and romance, or Warner Brothers-style comedy.)
Samples:
"You've always been vigored to destroy me!"
"I can't hit the censor at the front of the car!"
And, in the middle of a desperate, hostage-taking car chase:
"He hit him on purpose! That's just unreasonable!"
*snicker*
I'd also like to say that watching Cardcaptor Sakura in Audience Participation Mode is a whole lot of fun. CCS is quite entertaining; it's even more entertaining when you can communally MST3K it (Tomoyo: "I'll be able to film Sakura in that costume, in that position...!" Viewer: "Must be the one with the chains.") as well as snicker, groan, and go "Awww..." in appropriate places. Plus, the gay couple's big romantic moment was met with outright applause, so that gives me a nice warm feeling.

Date: 2003-11-09 04:20 am (UTC)i'm glad that everyone cheered for the big romantic moment. they are so beyond great together...
tomoyo-chan is so adorable in her devotion to sakura... there are a few moment in the manga where she alludes to her feelings, or whatever, and when sakura questions her about it, she'll tell sakura 'you're too young to understand' or 'i'll explain when you're older.' it's so cute, because sakura gets all aggravated, but it's so true. tomoyo is a lot more mature, and she always knows what's going on with people, long before they know themselves, sometimes! ^_^
so what all didja see?? cuz it sounds like you had fun.

Date: 2003-11-09 09:52 pm (UTC)I like them an awful lot. And Yuki was getting to display more than a pretty face in this lot of episodes, which was good; I was starting to wonder if there was anything in there. (Well, okay, Yue's in there, which isn't exactly a bad thing. But aside from him. ;)

So that's on purpose, then? I was wondering, because the subtext is so glaringly obvious, but on the other hand, CCS doesn't seem much interested in subtext; they drag it all out and make it maintext. :) (Normally I'd assume that I was just being over-sensitive and laying the slash-vision on a strong but non-sexual friendship, but the depth of Tomoyu's obsession with Sakura is awfully hard to explain any other way.)
The series shown (that is, the ones that I watched; there are two rooms showing different things throughout the day) were CCS and Scrapped Princess; there was supposed to be the end of Fruits Basket, but the person who was supposed to bring it didn't show up. Grr. I thought about staying to watch Kare Kano and GTO, but I was starting to get tired and headachy by then; maybe next month.
The badly-translated movie was eX-Driver, which actually didn't suffer from the bad translation so much because it was mainly interested in the exciting computer-animated car chases. And those were pretty good, so. :) (There was a plot of some sort, but I confess, by the time it was made clear who the villain was I'd totally lost what it was he was supposed to have done.) The schizophrenic one was Like the Clouds, Like the Wind; apparently it was a loosely historical story, which may account for some of the oddities in the plot. All the same, though, when you're going for a genuinely and sharply tragic ending, you've absolutely got to get better villains than a couple of bozos who started a rebellion because they were bored. (Not making this up, I swear.)

*laughs*
no, yuki is really sweet, too. ^_^ just exactly the perfect guy for a teen boy to fall for. ^_~

*laughs* yup, that's about 30% of why i'm CLAMP's bitch... because the ladies of CLAMP can't not stick in the slashyness... well, except for chobits, which is slash-free, but it has a really cute ending, and it's a sweet story. /tangent
anyway. yes, the purepure love of tomoyo for sakura is all but explicitly stated. very cute. and tomoyo is just such a cute and wonderful character... you should really look at the manga, because the spin of the story is totally differnet. the anime does some different things, adds some things, doesn't cover quite everything, so it's not as redundant as some other series. but anyway... very much with the cuteness. ^_^
Scrapped princess. i've heard of that. i've heard of kare kano as well, but i think it lacks m/m action. *laughs* i'm so focused. ^_~
GTO is... well, i've only seen the first dvd. it's good, and has some really cool elements... it just never took off with me. i know tons of people adore it.
eX-driver... *laughs* yeah, i think you could watch that with no dialogue and enjoy it just as well. ^_^

*laughs* yeah, doesn't sound quite right, does it? ^_^ ah well, they can't all be winners... still, that reminds me of back in the day when the main reason for watching anime was the cheese factor.
