The trouble with trying to overhaul your living space so it looks nice and has better furniture and, possibly, has flat surfaces available somewhere is the inevitable intermediate stage wherein you are surrounded by piles of everything you own and, at least in my case, start seriously questioning your life choices. I mean, did I really need to own all the comic books ever? I couldn't have collected, I don't know, bottlecaps instead? I bet bottlecap collections are restful. And don't require shelving.

As someone who is flying across the country in a month with the specific goal of starting to divest of roughly 75 comic boxes, I can say, with all sincerity, that I feel your pain.

See, we clearly should have gotten into this bottlecaps thing long ago. I bet you don't even need longboxes to collect bottlecaps. And if you decide you don't want them you can just throw them out! Doesn't it sound idyllic?

My answer has always been "Shelves! Everywhere you look, shelves!" Which admittedly does not do anything for making the apartment less cluttered, but seeing as you would probably have to set fire to my apartment to make it not cluttered, I will settle for things being cluttered on shelves instead of all over the floor.

Yes. I recently had to get out stuff out of one of my rooms to change my desk, so both my other room and my kitchen was stacked with piles of boxes (many of them comics of course). In the process I decided to reorganize the boxes some, so they wouldn't just be the naturally evolving mostly chronological dumps that happen when I start a new box without reboxing oodles of old ones, but be more based on series. It was total chaos and piles for days.

Comics! The hobby for people who just don't have enough cataloging in their lives! (And piles, of course. Piles happen.)

I need to start paring down my collection as well. My only consolation is that DC has made it a pretty easy decision for me as to what I'm going to get rid of with how they've changed everything around.

I hate that intermediate stage. It always make me wonder if the renovation plan is worth it.

Yeah, there's definitely a certain amount of "if I'm probably never going to read this again, and I'm never going to need it for fanfic reference, and the entire universe it was part of is gone...why I am hanging onto it, again?"

As it is, everything's in boxes, and since the last couple moves and going back to school, they're not even in organized boxes.

I'd wish for bottlecaps but I suspect this problem happens eventually with ANYTHING.

Shelves! Shelves are the answer to all life's problems! (You have been in my apartment, so you can appreciate the seriousness of the situation when I say I'm getting more shelving. Well, actually I'm replacing some of the shelving with different shelving, but still a net total increase in shelving.)

As it is, everything's in boxes, and since the last couple moves and going back to school, they're not even in organized boxes.

Ouch. Piles are a mess but at least you can get at stuff sometimes. Hopefully shelves will be in your future!

(Also, if you leave everything in boxes too long, your Transformers will start fighting, and there'll be nothing but spare parts when you open them back up. ;)
