There are no holidays on Apokolips--at least, none that a human would recognize. In Granny's orphanage and the Armagetto, the only things to celebrate are death, and Darkseid.

It's in defiance of that, Barda knows, that Scott throws himself so enthusiastically into the holidays of his adopted planet, and Valentine's Day is one of his favorites. That first time he'd tried to celebrate it, she'd thought they'd been invaded by enemies with a floral obsession. With unfortunate consequences to Scott's decorations, but she *had* apologized afterwards. (She still secretly thinks the makeup sex was more to the point than candy hearts, but then the melted chocolate had turned out to be very useful.)

So she plays the human game with him, accepting his floods of flowers and candlelit dinners and sunset flights over the water. She's even surprised herself at how much pleasure she takes in the rituals--the appeal of useless beauty comes hard to her sometimes, but it does come. Scott isn't the only one unlearning the habits of Apokolips.

But she'll never need a calendar to remind her of what they are to each other, of how far they've come. All she needs--all she's ever needed--is one look in his eyes, to set her free.

Awwwwwwwwww. Scott and Barda! *loves them* Scott *would* be fanatical about Valentine's day.

....*and* I just got the box set of them with Oberon. *plays with figures*

And Barda would have been so baffled, because it's way outside her cultural context. "It's to show how much I love you!" "...what does foliage have to do with that?"

I wonder if there's ever actually been a Scott/Barda holiday story? I remember a Christmas story with Orion and Highfather, but I would think the concept of a holiday is less alien to people from New Genesis (not that Orion was into it anyway).

Oooh, those look pretty.

Aw.

(If I was more familiar with them, I would probably be able to expand on that. But I liked it!)

Oh, they're cool, really. Admittedly my few issues of the original MISTER MIRACLE series don't do that much for me (while I really do like NEW GODS), but the Scott and Barda bits are the best. And what I've got of the second series is entertainingly silly (well, DeMatteis in comedy mode, are we surprised?)

And thanks!

Sweet without being sticky. (Except for the melted chocolate.) Very nice.

Glad you liked it! (And the melted chocolate was cleaned off very thoroughly. ;) Although the sheets were never quite the same.)

Mmm, Barda. Big dumb warrior woman, except she isn't dumb, she's perfectly capable of enjoying things that don't involve smashing, and there was decency in there before she got anywhere near Scott (which for someone from her background is impressive). Lots of potential there, really.
