Oh, I like this meme!

To pick up Connor Hawke: Seriously honey - sex is like pizza. Even if it's bad it's still pretty darn good. |
*snickers* Well, it wouldn't work, but it's something I can definitely see someone saying to him.
To pick up Kyle Rayner: You are like a candy bar: half sweet and half nuts. |
I'm almost tempted to steal that one for a fic....
To pick up Roy Harper: Excuse me. I'm from the FBI (the Fine Body Investigators) and I'm going to have to ask you to assume the position. |
*falls off chair laughing* Oh, yeah, that'd work! Not that it's hard to pick Roy up...
And over on the Legion side...
To pick up Querl Dox: Do you have a Bandaid? Cos I just scraped my knee falling for you. |
Okay, that's not gonna get me anywhere. Then again, there is no useful pickup line for him--either you're a tall blond with superstrength, or you're not.

Date: 2004-10-03 01:31 am (UTC)Hmm. I finally gave in and read (some of) Post-boot legion, and suddenly Brainy's taste in women is creeping me the hell out. (Although maybe with less emphasis.) It's just... it seems like about 80% of his emotional experience is tied up somehow with his mother. (Because there was that one issue with the telepath and the jail. And later a really weird fantasy involving a birthday cake. And how she's the only one he considers an actual *person*. And stuff.)
And his mother is, like, this tall blond
with superstrength...You see where I'm going with this. Boy has *issues*.

Date: 2004-10-05 08:48 am (UTC)This has never actually bothered me, for several reasons; for one thing, he never actually got a relationship going, so it's kind of a moot point. Plus, it's never suggested that he's sexually attracted to his mother (given his upbringing it wouldn't be surprising, actually, but they never went there) or that he's looking to place Andromeda or Supergirl in any kind of maternal role. He has a very strong reaction to a particular physical type, and it seems likely that it's because his mother is of that physical type, but he displays different feelings towards the two.
This doesn't mean that I think he's at all emotionally healthy, or that you're wrong about the level of his involvement with the memory of his mother. (I wish they'd handled it better when she finally showed up, but it was eminently clear how much she meant to him.) I just think it's less incestuous than it looks.

Date: 2004-10-05 02:40 pm (UTC)Um... *clickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclick* Hah, found it: (From Legionaires 65 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v427/justiard/07.jpg))
Okay, it's not a birthday cake, she bakes him a pie. I had remembered the smoke as coming from a candle, for some reason. Still no less WTF. (Also, her necklace is reminding me of some mind/power-control collar I saw in an x-men comic, but I choose to assume this is just me not understanding 30th century fashions and not actually even more evidence of Brainy needing a shrink.)
when he's stuck in the 20th century the post-Crisis Supergirl stops by needing his help, and Brainy responds in the same brain-turned-off way; near the end of the story he says--damn it, I don't have the issue available, but it's to the effect that he doesn't know if he's actually interested in her or if he's just fixated on the way she looks.
Huh. I didn't see that one. Do you happen to remember what issue it is?
I just think it's less incestuous than it looks.
It didn't strike me as incestuous so much as *creepy* and telling of... something. Er. How to explain.
Okay, in the issue where he's in jail and there's the telepath sifting through his mind, we learn that Brainy views (or at least *viewed*, but there's no real reason to think he changed his mind) the rest of the population as barely evolved animals. Monkey-things. *Except*, of course, for his mother, with whom he spent, what? The two minutes it took her to reject him?
Anyway, so it's pretty clear that post-boot Querl has little interest or respect for pretty much *anyone*. Until, at least, Andromeda. (And, considering his life up 'til that point, I have little trouble believe he had never before been in close contact with someone of her *cough* physical type.) And then, something in his brain goes, click. Like, OMG, she's coded as another actual *person* in my worldview. I have no idea how to deal with this. And the fact that she finds him disgusting and wants nothing to do with him? Not actually doing anything to break that idea.
Any possible romantic notions he might have entertained were probably more a function of adolescence and fascination than anything. (BUT, although I've read most of the earlier issues, it's possible I'm missing something important.) Your interpretation may vary, of course.
So, no, I don't think he's really looking for a mother figure, strange fantasy page aside. I'm just disturbed about how the whys of his reactions to Supergirl-types worked themselves out in my brain. I stick with my original analysis of 'creepy'.
