So yesterday, in amongst the things I picked up at the comic store, I found the February issue of TEEN TITANS GO!, and it's filling me with such inexpressible glee that I must share.

We start with the Titans fighting the Puppet King. You remember the Puppet King, right? From the episode that might as well have been entitled The Raven And Starfire Show? Right. Anyway, Starfire gets smashed into a Valentine's Day display in a very pink and purple splash page. "I fell in love...and it hurt..." *represses snicker* And it's Raven to the rescue (because the boys are all busy watching the Puppet King escape). "Star! Are you all right? I didn't mean to send you crashing into this pointlessly pink window." And then she heals Starfire's injured arm. Aww. Sweet.

Star, however, is more interested in knowing what's up with all these cards and hearts. "What is the Valentine's Day?" Raven, being Raven, promptly informs her that it's "a commercially contrived occasion for forced displays of affection." And then proceeds to bond with the Goth store employee over the subject, framed in the center of this big heart display. That's our girl. Meanwhile, Cyborg and Beast Boy are anxious to give their version of V-Day:

"People exchange cards and write love poems and go on romantic dates and send each other flowers--"
"And give each other candy and chocolates and pizza!"

Okay, so maybe Beast Boy is a little stuck on the edibles part of the day. But still, romantic dates, love poems--that's pretty clear, right? So naturally at this point Star will turn to her Designated Crush Object Robin and look at him meltingly....

....uh-uh. "Would you care to exchange the Valentine's Day cards with me, Raven?"

No, I swear, that's what she does. It's right there on the page...!

Raven, unfortunately, is unavailable because she's made a secret date with the Goth, so a clueless Cyborg takes the opportunity to drag the plot back where it's supposed to go, by giving Robin a meaningful look and saying someone should show Star the true meaning of Valentine's Day. (Insert own joke here.)

So thusly prodded, Robin takes Starfire out on a date...and it's terrible. He takes her to an arcade and abandons her, gets into an argument with a fairground worker, and has more fun in the Tunnel of Love after the Puppet King attacks again. Oh, yeah, he's back again. So fighty fight, acrobatics, mind control, and the PK winds up crashing directly into the restaurant where Raven is having apparently quite a pleasant dinner with her Goth. Definitely his mistake. That out of the way, Starfire wants to know what Raven's been up to (and why she cares is left as an exercise for the student). In true Tamaranean fashion, however, she is not upset when she finds out that not only was Raven on a date but it was a pretty good date (looks to me like Raven got him flowers and won him a stuffed dog; I love Raven more all the time); instead she puts her arm around Raven and says that since Raven is such an expert on these rituals maybe Robin should consult her next time...

My two immediate responses: 1) In any universe, having to get romantic advice from Raven? Shame. Deep shame. 2) Never mind the next time, Star, go directly to the source. You know you want to. In fact you pretty much already said that you want to. Oh, sure, she looks like she's having fun with her Goth boytoy, but I'm sure it's just a passing fling...

*sighs happily* I generally ship Robin/Starfire where the cartoon is concerned (and they give me plenty of reason), but sometimes I am tempted to the way of Raven/Starfire. This is definitely one of those times...

hee, that's so cute!! ^_^

raven and starfire would make a cute couple...

and yanno, i was in the toy store yesterday (i was good! the only toy bought was for my nephew! ...i really want it, tho...) and they had teen titans toys. so cute! but they had these two packs of titans... robin and starfire, right. raven and cyborg. and... robin and beast boy.

hee!

now, i know what the marketers are thinking... more people are gonna want a robin than any other. but i can't help thinking that robin has to be a little slutty to keep beast boy in order.

^_^

they really shoulda had a raven/starfire package, tho... for the girls. ^_^

Teen Titans toys? Oooh. Oooh. Oooh. I wouldn't have had your restraint, not at all... *snickers at the polygamous Robin* Starfire won't mind. She's big on friends having fun... ;)

I expect there isn't a Raven/Starfire package because they don't think it would sell--the expected audience is little boys who don't care about the girl characters. (I can't tell you how accurate either of those assumptions are, but I'll bet any amount of money they're in operation.)
