I thought Fruits Basket wasn't coming out till April? Well, hey, not complaining.
--So...the whole Wacky Transformation Hijinks thing when Uo and Hana come over, none of that was in the manga? I had to sit through it in the anime for no reason whatsoever? (I know, I know, I'm sure a lot of people found it hilarious, but it's so very not my thing, and makes the girls look really stupid besides.) On the plus side, that means I didn't have to deal with it here, and got the story from Tohru's childhood (get your foreshadowing now, folks!) instead. Cool.
--Okay, I confess, I've always found the Yuki-in-a-dress stuff a little odd. I realize this is rather the point, but still, I'm trying to imagine a group of teenage girls wanting to dress their idol up in girls' clothes, and him not only going along with it but doing so in front of the whole school (including Kyo), and, well, I'm having trouble. Maybe it's just a manga thing. The author is refreshingly honest on this point, though: she just wanted to write cross-dressing and seized on poor, pretty Yuki as her victim.
--Hatori teasing him about it is evil fun, though. (And I can accept the innuendo and be amused without taking it any farther, I think. There's more than enough subtext going around here without my needing to squick myself quite that badly.)
--"What is two plus one?" "Three?" Yes. Yes. And yes. Basic arithmetic has never been so sweet.
--So when Yuki's upset about Akito seeing him in that outfit, is that because Yuki thinks he won't like it...or because he will? (I only said I wasn't going to squick myself about Hatori...)
--The way the crosshatching is done in this series looks really strange. Especially with the eyes; people look like they have the eyes of giant insects.
--Momiji's random German is somewhat disorienting. But I'll get used to it eventually, I'm sure.
--I'm glad the anime expanded on the New Year's episode--not that the Sohma house plot isn't the most important part, but I like the random lunacy, and Shigure's editor, and Uo and Kyo. (Irony: this was my first episode of the anime, and I was so lost. The ending made me mist up anyway, though.)
--Okay, so if Tohru has been living with the Sohmas for four months, then Kyo ran away from home eight months ago. Right? Right. Possibly Takaya's one of those authors that doesn't do so well with the math.
--I'm kind of surprised that Tohru's appeal to the boys that they should go see their parents works on Kyo. After all, his mother is dead, and his father is either dead or estranged. I doubt Yuki's real close to his parents either, of course, but I expect they're at least speaking to each other. It could be a manifestation of the rivalry with Yuki--if Yuki went and Kyo didn't, it could seem as though Kyo didn't have the courage to go. Or Kyo might have felt too pointedly isolated by being the only one not going to the festival, even if it was by his own choice. Or possibly the author just hadn't worked out his background yet. ;)
--Hey, look, Haru-introspection! *purrs*
--Shigure's contempt for Akito is kind of blatant, huh? Surprised he gets away with it...
--Hatori says he suppressed people's memories at the instruction of his father and Akito. Does this mean that Hatori's father was the previous head of the family (that presumably being the position that dictates who gets one's memories erased)? Or just that the order sometimes passed through Hatori's father, since he had authority over his son? Who did it before Hatori? Does the ability go with his zodiac sign?
--So at first I was disappointed that we didn't get actual flashback of Kana/Hatori, and then, look, flashback! (Missing the joke about how a real seahorse would have died, though. Credit to whoever put that one in the anime. ;) This is such an achy, bittersweet story, and it hits just the right thematic notes for there to be hope at the end. Although...Kana still loved him? Oh man. *beats romanticism down ruthlessly* She's getting married. That's why she's getting married. There are no second chances. Well, there are, but not that second chance. Really.
Also very pleased to have scored three transparent FB postcards at my local comics store. (Actually, it's more like my local anime store; it just happens to have comics as well.) Pretty pretty pretty.

Borders says they haven't got it, but Barnes and Noble does. (With reference to their websites, that is, I haven't looked at any actual stores.) I found it browsing at Suncoast Motion Pictures.
