I was enjoying TT #7. Really I was. Slightly over the top in places, and I remain unconvinced that that's Bart, but aside from that. I mean, a Gar and Kory I can actually recognize, what more could a girl ask for?

And then I hit the last two pages.

Never mind the general out-of-characterness of it, for the moment. Just please, somebody, anybody, tell me that Geoff Johns is not implying what it looks like he's implying. I'm begging. Lie if you have to. Until then, I'm going to be over here, whimpering under the bed...

Now I'm wondering whether I should pick up that TT issue Friday when I get my comics (it would be the first of this series I buy), just to see what rattled you so.

On the one hand, as I said, most of this issue was pretty good, and would, I think, be a decent jumping-on point.

On the other hand, if I'm right about that last sequence--well, I chose that mood for a reason. *shudders*

What happened? I'm not picking up my issue until next week.

I read it, though since I'm not very familiar with the characters I'm not all that squicked by the incest implications. More confused actually. I mean, I remember Slade Wilson and Terra from the Judas Contract, but not seeing any daughter before this. But I read the scene to mean that he has an incest relationship with her as well.

Rose is a 90s character introduced in the DEATHSTROKE book, although she was a Titan for...*checks*...um, a whole five issues. :) Slade didn't know she existed until she was fourteen, and their relationship after that point was brief and stormy. For more details go here (http://titanstower.com/source/whoswho/rose.html).

though since I'm not very familiar with the characters I'm not all that squicked by the incest implications.

Obviously I can't say what you'd think if you knew them better, but I can say that even aside from the visceral needing-to-scrub-my-brain-with-steel-wire reaction to a father sleeping with his teenage daughter (which is a major factor, no question), I'm pretty sure it would disturb the hell out of them, too, to the point where I just can't imagine it happening. And specifically I can't imagine Rose going along with it unless something were very, very wrong with her (which her behavior here would tend to support), and the idea of Slade doing that to her... *shudders* I'm really, really</> hoping that this is all a misinterpretation.

I didn't mean that I wouldn't find the incest disturbing, just that I'm not per se "squicked" by it in the sense of not being able to enjoy reading stories with dark themes like that. Of course OOC behavior always sucks.

But you know, you have at least successfully pimped me into reading the Teen Titan series for now, because I want to see how the story will continue. As if I needed another monthly comic book. I'm too easy. ;)

I'm capable of enjoying stories with dark themes (trying to read the W/P Titans would create real problems otherwise :). But parent/child incest...well, not only do I find it possibly disproportionately disturbing (not that I think adults sleeping with their teenage children is not very disturbing objectively, but in comparison to my reactions to rape and murder and so on), but I cope with it best if the adult character is someone I have no sympathy for whatsoever, and genuinely believe would do that. Slade fails on both counts, so...it automatically becomes more disturbing.

(Remind me, have you read anything with him besides the Judas Contract? If not, I can see where one would have a not unreasonable reaction of "Well, he's a bad guy, what did you expect?")

W/P Titans? I'm not sure I know the acronym. Is it for Wolfman/Pérez as writer/artist team?

And I haven't read anything where Slade is a major character besides the Judas Contract. Only a couple of his guest appearances in recent Batman and Nightwing comics.

I...am going to hope for the best in that Geoff didn't *realize* what he was writing. Because OH MY GOD I WANTED TO GOUGE MY EYES OUT WITH A RUSTY SPOON.

Just from the OOC-ness alone. The other....

*convulsive shuddering*

I am right there with you, babe. Hand me that spoon when you're done.

As for the OOC-ness: Geoff claims there is an explanation for what these two characters are doing together. I don't find this as comforting as I might, since even if the explanation makes sense that doesn't mean it's going to take me anywhere I wanna go.

That's *exactly* why I don't have much faith in his reassurance. He said that about the Slade and Wintergreen situation too, and you know how I feel about the resolution of that. I don't have a lot of confidence I'll be any happier with this answer, either.

I thought he was talking about the mentoring portions of his relationship with her, and not that which is making you convulse in funny ways. Even though it looked like she was doped up on way too much something or other when she looked at him & took his hand.

Honest. But now that you mention this possibility, it's squicking me out.

Hmm. Now that I've calmed down, and taken another look at the conversation, you may be right. Mind you, the reason it didn't occur to me in the first place is that he didn't have a mentoring relationship with that character. I don't think he cared about her in the slightest. But lord knows this wouldn't be the first time Geoff Johns rewrote history to make his point, and I can see how the lines work from that perspective.

All things considered, though, it's still so horribly suggestive that if he didn't intend that, somebody needed to tell him firmly to do a rewrite.

.... You know, I was just mildly perplexed by the weird end of what had been a pretty darned good issue until [livejournal.com profile] kerithwyn reminded me to go back and read your comments... and now I've got Aerosmith's "Janie's Got a Gun" going through my head.

Ewww.

Otoh, maybe the loss of the babysitter will have Judd Winick finally acknowledging the existence of Lian Harper.

Possibly I should apologize for traumatizing the people who didn't see it. :) Judging by the comments at the message boards I checked, nobody there thought of it either--apparently I'm unusually sick. :)

Otoh, maybe the loss of the babysitter will have Judd Winick finally acknowledging the existence of Lian Harper.

*snorts* Outsiders acknowledge something about a character besides what Judd Winick wants to invent this week? Good luck. (All right, all right, so I'm being mean, and I dropped it several issues ago anyway. Maybe it's improved. But I'm still tempted to suggest that Lian hasn't shown up because she's done the smart thing and gone into hiding. :)

Nope, sadly Outsiders hasn't improved. By now I'm mocking myself for still keeping my hope that it might.
