Okay, 'Rith, *now* I'm screaming my glee.
Dec. 4th, 2003 09:07 pmDue to problems at my store, I didn't get this month's LEGION until today, a week late. Boy, was it worth the wait.
Okay, there was an actual plot in this issue. Really. Subplots, fight scenes, the revelation of the big threat (well, one of them), a couple of cute moments, and...you know, I actually have no idea what they're trying to do with Superboy. Maybe it's just for the nostalgia value. Anyway, there was all of that, and it still all pales in comparison to what happened with My Guys.
Querl Dox, Brainiac 5. That's him in the icon. The Legion's resident super-genius, with a twelfth-level brain and a knack for anything even remotely technological. One of the Legion's biggest assets, he's also, invariably, one of its biggest headaches. He's abrasive, arrogant, has no social skills to speak of, and tends to stay in his lab until either he's dragged out or he blows it up. (Actually, he's toned down a lot now, but in the early days of the series he was an even bigger pain in the neck than I'm indicating.) He also has a backstory and a vocabulary range that makes me forgive him all of the above.
Lyle Norg, Invisible Kid. He's bright, inventive, extremely cocky, an expert biochemist, and has a passion for secrets and secret ops. You want a dangerous espionage mission pulled off, he's your man. If you want faithful obedience to orders or anything even resembling diplomacy, however, you'd be wise to seek elsewhere. (He's also afraid of heights. I don't know why I find this so endearing, but I do.) Like Brainy, he has an angsty backstory. And did I mention that his previous writers have gone on record as saying they were planning for him to be gay?
These two have been striking sparks off each other since day one (generally not in a good way, but occasionally there were hints that there was more to it), and for as long as I've been reading the book, I've been dreaming idle daydreams as to What Could Be if either one of them had the faintest idea how to play nice.
Well. Brainy's gone through a life-changing experience or three (and they weren't all very well handled, but we'll skip over that), the book's been restarted, and we have new writers who tend to focus more heavily on plot. And somewhere along the way Brainy and Lyle appear to have warmed up from the day Brainy turned half the Legion into Bizarros and Lyle told him a monkey was smarter than he was. Warmed up considerably. Warmed up to the point that when Lyle got dumped through a stargate and the Legion came to rescue him, Brainy's reaction on seeing him was: "Lyle! Thank goodness you're okay!" Accompanied by a hug and a kiss. (It's on the cheek, but even if that was a normal greeting for two male characters, it's not normal for Brainy. About the most effusive he's previously gotten with anybody was a handshake.) Lyle looks awfully surprised...but then in the next panel he's saying "I knew you wouldn't let me down, Brainy," and giving him this look.
God. My Legion OTP is canon, or the next best thing. There's an on-panel kiss! *bounce* I am so thrilled I don't have the words; I feel like forgiving the writers every mistake they've ever made and any number they haven't. *looks dreamy* Brainy and Lyle. Lyle and Brainy. Oh, so pretty...
*grins* Okay, okay, I'll stop inflicting the fangirlishness on you all now--especially since I doubt anyone but 'Rith actually reads Legion. But let the record stand; this is a very, very good day. :)

Date: 2003-12-05 04:34 pm (UTC)NOW I can say: *squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!* Only, because it's me, it makes me want to write more pre-Crisis Lyle/Brainy. Go figure.

Date: 2003-12-05 05:16 pm (UTC)First, because, well, you're you. I know your preferences well. :)
Second, because--although I want to make it very clear that I Do Not Care--this wasn't really that well handled. It comes out of nowhere (I'm going to go study my back issues now, mind you, but really, if there were any previous signs of this I think I would have noticed) and is arguably out of character for Brainy (not the feelings for Lyle, but the openness in displaying them). In short, I can't really get into Brainy's head on this one, and that makes it hard to be fic-inspired.
But again. Don't care. Don't care. Don't care. They're canon! Yes!

Date: 2003-12-05 06:48 pm (UTC)It's not that I necessarily expect my characters to listen to me (I fall in love with the wrong sort for that), but Rond is supposed to be the more reasonable one in this relationship. But no. "My father tried to kill me, I was actually buried, dammit, and while I was dead my entire field of expertise was invalidated, and now my best friend's moving to another planet. I want a change; just give me the damn ring and let me get on with it." *glares at Rond*

Date: 2005-11-03 11:59 pm (UTC)Which reboot of Legion has the kiss in it???? I've seen the scans, and they're so teenagery and cute, they're the ones I want people picturing having hot sweaty sex when they're reading my story. *pouts*
And does this maybe mean you'll be writing more Lyle/Brainy someday? ^_^
