*horrified fascination*
Oct. 11th, 2003 09:39 pmI thought, maybe, part two of Teen Titans would be less dark than part one.
Okay, so granted, the happy ending. More or less required. But Christ, up until that point they were sure doing every damn thing they could to screw with our heads. Dark settings, ratcheting the tension up in almost every single scene, Slade just purring those appalling instructions into Robin's ear, and calmly responding to Robin's threats with "We do think alike"...*shudder*. This version of Slade is incredibly smart, incredibly creepy, and has a really good voice actor; his every interaction with Robin just sang with dominance and murderous tension. And I can't be the only one frankly whimpering at "Call me master."
The Titans don't have so much individual focus here, it's Slade's and Robin's story (and I wish they'd given Beast Boy less focus; you already committed to the psychological horror story, guys, just go with it and stop breaking the mood) but their total bewilderment and betrayal comes across well, particularly Star, who gets one of the show's more heartstopping moments. God, honey, don't do things like that, you freaked me and Robin out completely.
The ending, to be honest, came across a bit weakly for me, mainly due to my mutterings of "This is a stupid plan." Dangerous missions are one thing. Missions where the enemy pushes a button and you all die are something else, and provide a high likelihood that you will not only die but die pointlessly. And even if Slade doesn't actually want them dead (he needs them to keep Robin in line, after all), it's not as though they're going to pose much of a threat to him while writhing on the ground. Even Robin's big plan, impressed as I absolutely was (once I figured out what he was doing, anyway), was one hell of a risk to take with his friends' lives. If Slade had decided he wasn't worth it after all... *shudders* It was probably a justifiable risk, under the circumstances. Probably. It was also a display of arrogant, coldblooded calculation, and I can't decide if that means he's modeling himself after Slade or Batman. :)
And oh, yes, I caught that too. They probably never will follow up on that, because what sane reason could they give why Robin isn't living with him? In any other episode, in any other state of mind, that might bother me. Here it just added to my general state of creeped-out-ness, not to mention fueling those fic speculations I've been making. Robin's head is already a bad enough place right now; what's a few more traumas added into the mix?
So. Let's get back to Justice League, guest starring this week only Dr. Destiny. *sighs* Why do I figure I'm going to be doing yet more whimpering before the night is over?
