Tonight we have Smallville, Angel, and the West Wing. I should be excited. I am excited.

But if nobody minds, I'm going to spend a moment here getting nostalgic for Sports Night.

The thing is, I didn't actually start watching Sports Night till it was almost over. My experience of it is almost all reruns. (And fic, natch. ;) So it's not like I didn't know, nearly from the start, that two seasons was all there were. You would expect me to be used to it by now.

But last night I finally got to see "Shane," the last episode I hadn't seen already (due to its being inexplicably skipped in the previous rerun cycle). And I'm depressed, because that's it, now; no more Sports Night.

And it was a good episode. Casey is so cute, all excited that he's getting this one-on-one interview with Shane, and then chasing around the office trying to protect the twit from the consequences of insulting everyone in New York. (Side note: is my conviction that this guy is an old crush of Casey's shared by anyone else? Or am I reading too much into Casey saying they're going on a date? ;) Dana is...well, she's not professional, exactly, but she's also absolutely right, and she gets to take Casey apart cheerfully and point out that, no, he's got no case here. Isaac is long-sufferingly tolerant of the lunatics on his staff ("And you just sat here?" "It's my desk!") Natalie, in the grand tradition of Sports Night characters (or is that Aaron Sorkin characters?) getting totally derailed by something nobody else can believe they're even thinking about, much less obsessing over, is complaining because the Vatican's declared there's no Hell. (Actually, it sounds to me like she's confusing "Hell is not a place" with "there is no such thing as Hell," but then neither I or Natalie is a theologian.) Jeremy sits on the sidelines and watches her rant (and promises her fellow bar patrons that she is not in fact going to rob a bank, no matter what she just said) and finally shuts her up with an incredibly sweet speech. I love Jeremy.

And Dan, yeah, well, this one is All Danny. It's Danny getting absolutely nailed by the woman he's refusing to think of as his therapist, even on the stuff he probably has refused to even tell himself, much less her; it's Danny so desperately eager to hear that she likes the show that it sends up neon warning flares about the actual state of his stability and self-confidence; it's Danny mispronouncing a name thirty times and completely losing it; it's Danny just sitting there on Abby's couch, face in his hands and wanting to know why this is happening to him. Most of all, it's Casey wanting to know what's wrong, and Danny stumbling through an explanation of how he just needs to sit down, and maybe he isn't going to say much tonight, and is that okay, and Casey telling him that yes, it's okay, and Casey's right here.

Oh, I miss this show. I miss the patented Aaron Sorkin snappy dialogue, and I miss how they could get me excited about sporting events I would rather have had root canal than actually watch, and how everyone on the staff except maybe Isaac took turns being complete lunatics and they always got the job done anyway, and how the comedy and the insanity never stopped them from dealing with the tragic and the dark, and how Jeremy and Natalie felt like a real relationship, even--maybe especially--when they broke up, and how Casey and Dan had been partners for ten years and could finish each other's sentences and loved each other desperately, even though they were complete jerks to each other sometimes. I even miss the theme music, damn it, and hearing Dan or Casey tell me that I was watching Sports Night on CSC...

*sighs* Right, okay, rant over. If you'll excuse me, I think I'm going to go find my Sports Night fic and cuddle up with it...
