Sep. 12th, 2003 01:55 pmJust a few scattered comments on some of this week's comics. Not much in the way of spoilers, but cutting just in case.
Teen Titans--'Rith is handling this one, and honestly I don't have an opinion yet. Partly because I don't believe it, but also because it strikes me as something where the way it's done is just as important as what's really going on. Give me six months. :) I'll tell you, though, I'm enjoying this a lot more than I am Outsiders. Especially the Starfire bits.
JSA--Surprisingly readable this month. I'm tempted to wonder if the departure of Goyer has anything to do with it, but that would be mean. Still, some decent character bits in here, and while I can't help wishing that someone else would write Todd with the depth and strength his story really deserves, his insistence that he did all this relieves me--I was afraid everything would be suddenly all sunshine now. (A trap this issue doesn't entirely avoid, to be honest, although most of it can be chalked up to Alan and Jennie-Lynn's desire to wish the whole thing away.) Finally, finally getting back to the Crimson Avenger plot. (Given how many issues were devoted to killing time until #50, I really have to wonder what took so damn long.) And look! It's Jesse! And...*starts to giggle helplessly* See, I've kinda had this idea that teenage Jesse might have had a crush on teenage Rick--older, exciting, talented, and not nearly as much of a jerk as Hector. So watching them flirt in an actual comic blows my mind a little. That said, I have long-standing complaints about this portrayal of Rick. See below.
JSA All-Stars--You know, I've finally realized what the problem is with Johns' and Goyer's Hourman. They're writing Rex Tyler. The biochemistry expertise, the addiction focus, the determination to be a superhero, the introduction of transdermal patches as if they were something new...it all makes sense. For Rex. Unfortunately, this is Rick Tyler, and so all of that is completely wrong. Oops.
Nightwing--Babs is an idiot. Dick is an idiot. Tad is an--well, okay, Tad is an idiot, but even so this seems a bit much. I am not an idiot, and I'm dropping this book now. Wake me when we have a new writer.
I'm saving Green Arrow for later, as I want to discuss it at more length. Will there be ranting? Well...maybe a little. :)
