In the anime Fruits Basket, the Zodiac of the Sohma family are unable to embrace any member of the opposite sex without turning into an animal, unless the person in question is also a member of the Zodiac. Right?

Some thoughts suggest themselves, there. Like:

--Inbreeding. Lots and lots of inbreeding. Looked at that way, certain characters become suddenly more plausible. :)

--Okay, so, yes, heterosexual sex outside the family is plausible, but the thought of the choreography required amuses me. "Okay, you'll lie down there, and I'll sit up like this, and maybe I should tie my hands behind my back just to be sure..." (Am I contemplating tying certain characters to the bed just for the fun of it? Maaaybe. ;)

--On the other hand, a better excuse for gay sex I've rarely seen. (Not that the characters actually indulging in it seem to require any excuse for anything whatsoever. I'm just saying.) Although that doesn't actually help me slash anyone, as the only Sohma/non-Sohma pairings I'm interested in are het. Ah well. It's not like there's a shortage of prettys to slash, regardless...

A friend is doing an anime night in a week or two, I think this was one of the things on the list to watch. Have to see this for myself....

Oh, you'll love it. Fruits Basket brings the sweet and the angsty and the funny and the het and the gay, all at once. :) (And by gay I do not mean hints of gay, or slash-potential. I mean male characters openly having an affair.) And the cute schoolgirl heroine somehow fails to be annoying and passes right on into sweet, lord only knows how. [livejournal.com profile] trixie_chick and [livejournal.com profile] genx88 are fans, ask them. :) (And Noel wrote great drabbles, which I did not feedback because I am a very bad person.)

Cool. I shall put in the request for viewing to the host, and should I thereafter become obsessed, it will become one of the many things that are All Your Fault.

*bouncebouncebouce* carmen!!!! i didn't know you watched fruits basket!!

^_^

er, i think the inbreeding is more a function of akito, evil overlord extrodinaire, than anything else. because while their curse does limit their sociability, the stigma of their curse is really more detrimental.

tho, yes, the physics of the het cursed sohma sex is rather... heh. ^_^

with so many pretty boys, the gay is just gonna be there no matter what. throw in ayame, and you get insta!gay. then toss in akito obsessing over yuki, and having that strange hold on hatori, and then haru just openly admitting that yuki was the first person he loved...

*beaming with fruits basket love* ^_^

so, pairings preferences? ^_~

Once a month, I go to an all-day animefest. So far this has gotten me from the New Year's episode to the one with Yuki's fanclub (also I've found that Scrapped Princess is pretty good and that Cardcaptor Sakura is the world's guiltiest pleasure), and last week I caved and bought the first DVD. Hence this post. :)

Well, true. And my above snickering aside, if your partner knew your secret, you could work something out (it's not something you can plausibly keep a secret to your lover; even if they're willing to accept without explanation that at no time can either of you put your arms around the other, accidents will happen). It's the attitude that No One Can Know that really leads to the need to keep it in the family. Although I think my basic point, that there must be a whole lot of inbreeding, is still valid, and in a few generations it's not going to be the Sohma family so much as the Sohma Lunatic Asylum. (No, it wouldn't be that big a change. ;)

Ayame almost killed me in his first episode, with his speech about sleeping with all the boys. :) Mind you, if he was my brother, I'd probably be warding him off too, but since he's not I can enjoy the onscreen chaos. :)

then toss in akito obsessing over yuki, and having that strange hold on hatori, and then haru just openly admitting that yuki was the first person he loved...

*shudders* Okay, I don't think I've seen the first yet. I mean, Yuki and Akito having a seriously unhealthy relationship, yes, by all means (I've come to the conclusion that what Yuki and Kyo are actually in competition for is which of them is more emotionally damaged); I just haven't noticed any evidence it was sexual in the episodes I've seen. Same for Hatori, although that probably just means I haven't watched enough episodes. (This month's meeting is this coming Saturday, and believe me, I'm counting the days.) Haru and Yuki, yeah, that was cute. :)

so, pairings preferences?

Um...Yuki/Tohru/Kyo. Yes, all three. *shrugs helplessly* Those are the characters I'm obsessed with, and either I want them all together or I want them platonic. Which is not to say that I wouldn't read fics pairing up two of three, that I don't think Ayame and Shigure are cute, that I'm opposed to exploring the dangerous territory that is Akito's sex life, or that I have any objection to pairing Haru up with anyone at all. ;) But if you want to know what me, personally, lusts after, that's the one. :)

hm, never heard of Scrapped Princess. i adore CCS, tho. ^_^ i just love all the characters. Yue. good story, too. Yue. it's refreshing to have something like that, and not have any true villains. Yue.

*coughs* sorry.

Although I think my basic point, that there must be a whole lot of inbreeding, is still valid, and in a few generations it's not going to be the Sohma family so much as the Sohma Lunatic Asylum. (No, it wouldn't be that big a change. ;)

*laughs* no, that's totally true. the sohma family has its own complex after all, and most of the time they seem to find companionship within the household. but, as genX said, most of those are more likely to be second or third or more cousins, and not that closely related. still and all... incestuous little clan. ^_^

Ayame almost killed me in his first episode, with his speech about sleeping with all the boys. :) Mind you, if he was my brother, I'd probably be warding him off too, but since he's not I can enjoy the onscreen chaos. :)

oh, yeah! ayame is just a force of nature! he's incredible and awesome. ^_^

the akito/yuki thing... it's seriously f@#$ed up, yeah. they have a bad past. the anime only goes so far... after that, we'll need to depend on tokyopop for the story, but akito is seemingly fixated on yuki. perhaps because he is the rat, perhaps because he is so pretty, and perhaps because they were both sick a lot as children... whatever, he likes to have control over yuki, which can be interpreted in many different ways, and considering the fact that their relationship can be described as abusive, at best, i don't like to dwell on the possibility of it being sexual.

er, sorry. i ramble. *blush*

i have a weird fixation on akito, so i think i tend to read a lot into him. he's... just really intriguing to me. fascinating. sexy. *coughs*

(I've come to the conclusion that what Yuki and Kyo are actually in competition for is which of them is more emotionally damaged)

well, that's a given. ^_^

Um...Yuki/Tohru/Kyo. Yes, all three.

*cheers* absolutely!!! ^_^ i mean, c'mon! you're a sweet girl, with two guys in love with you. neither of them can hold you, but they can hold each other, both of them are probably as fixated on each other, for various reasons, as they are on you, and all three of you seem to have entangled fates.

and you're going to pick?!?! please! take 'em both.

^_^

hm, never heard of Scrapped Princess.

It's about a princess who it was prophesied would destroy the world when she was sixteen; she was supposed to be killed at birth, it didn't happen, and now she and her siblings are busy running from everyone on the planet.

i adore CCS, tho. ^_^ i just love all the characters. Yue. good story, too. Yue. it's refreshing to have something like that, and not have any true villains. Yue.

*raises eyebrow* You know something about Eriol I don't know? (On second thought, if you do, maybe you'd better not tell me. Bear in mind I've got as far as him sending Sakura to Wonderland.) It's the soap-opera complexity of CCS I like (everybody is concealing their true mystical nature...!), that and the fact that it's really funny and knows it's really funny. (And watching it in a room with a dozen other people who know it's really funny doesn't hurt, either. Also, there's Yue. ;)

but, as genX said, most of those are more likely to be second or third or more cousins, and not that closely related. still and all... incestuous little clan. ^_^

I suppose I'm biased because I don't think I've seen a member of the Sohma family who wasn't in the zodiac, but I guess there have to be some. :)

I will not go there. I will not go there. I will not...oh, hell, who am I kidding? I'm an angst-bitch. I live to go there. Yuki should only hope I don't write fic.

I'm on record as saying that the most elegant thing to do about a triangle is turn it into a threesome, and this situation just begs for it.

*pauses* Although if the physics of two people trying not to set off the curse were amusing, three is going to be...really entertaining.

the anime (and, i'm guessing, the manga...) ignores those poor non-cursed sohma's. but not all the cursed ones are closely related, either...

they just all cross-dress and sleep together. *coughs*

I will not go there. I will not go there. I will not...oh, hell, who am I kidding? I'm an angst-bitch. I live to go there. Yuki should only hope I don't write fic.

LOL! well, i think yuki will kill you if you try, but... poor boy, he's only a fictive. ^_^

yeah, would work easier if i could in any way picture tohru as kinky....

Mmm-hmm. I also know that it will spoil the plot for me when I watch the anime, and that I like the anime better. So I'm reluctantly keeping my hands off and my head out of the websites.

LOL! well, i think yuki will kill you if you try, but... poor boy, he's only a fictive. ^_^

Oh, they would if they could, those poor victimized fictives of mine, but... Although at the rate I write, Yuki's probably safe.

yeah, would work easier if i could in any way picture tohru as kinky....

Um. Yes. That's a problem. Although possibly by the time any of this is an issue, the Sohmas will have rubbed off on her a little. ;) In Tohru's defense, though, I can see her as willing--perhaps even enthusiastic ;)--to try new things, and extremely patient with both the necessary restrictions and the inevitable screwups. That'll help.

But the bondage games will probably have to wait until Yuki and Kyo are alone together. ;)

Well, the Sohma family is fairly big, so I don't think everyone is first cousins, I think some are, but some of them are probably more like second cousins or so.

Also, the gay vibes are just... I'll say this... there are far, far, far, too many crossdressers in Fruits Baskets.
