The O.C. really is going to kill me.

Not because of the sudden obsessive desire to tie it in with comics fandom (although contemplating what Seth thinks of that GREEN LANTERN story about gay-bashing is indeed very, very tempting). Because I don't know who the hell to ship for.

I'm here for the pretty slash. That's what I signed up for. Just about anyone who's watched the show will get that, I think; it's been there in bright blazing letters from episode one. I clearly remember thinking that, no, this couldn't get any slashier, and at that moment Seth hugged Ryan. My mistake.

They have continued to be slashy, with Ryan charging to Seth's rescue and Seth helping Ryan evade the legal system and banter and snark and the way they look at each other and yes indeed, the ending of this latest episode. They're adorable. They're not competing for a girl, they don't have a Tragic Destiny, and they need each other.

So what's my problem? Marissa. Not in the "Ick, TPTB is forcing a girl into this relationship and we have to work around it!" sense. In the sense where I like Marissa, who's charming and warm and a reasonably decent human being, is currently enduring real problems, and has the kind of chemistry with Ryan where I hear background music even when there isn't any. I don't want to work around her; I want to watch them laugh at each other and give each other confidence and share eager uncertain kisses.

Meanwhile, Seth could do much, much worse than hook up with Anna. (He could hook up with Summer, for example, although the chances of that are fortunately zero.) If I wasn't in love with Anna the minute she opened her mouth, it only took until "I can't wait." She's smart and tough and snarky and she reads comics, for heaven's sakes. (Although the graphic novels line made me roll my eyes. I realize people say this, but comic books are comic books. Graphic novels are something else. And what kind of novel is twenty-two pages, anyway?) And she likes our guys, both of them.

Het or slash. Het or slash. Who shall I cheer for?

A threesome? Just kidding. Though isn't the good thing about fandom (and the subsequent fanfic) that you can have your cake and eat it too? I mean, there's no rule against liking Seth/Ryan, Ryan/Marissa and Seth/Anna all at the same time, and enjoy all the possible ships.

Well, to include all the characters I like, it would have to be a foursome, and while Anna might go for it I'm not sure anyone else would. ;) (And I'm still leaving Luke out in the cold, but while Luke is doing his best to be a 3D character, I still feel no guilt there. He'll find someone else in short order.)

*considers* Generally I like threesomes, but here I don't know that I feel sufficient *click* between any of the outer members of the triangle. (Well, all right, Ryan and Luke, but while I could conceivably get them in bed together, I can't see Marissa as joining them. And, again, not really going to great lengths to see Luke happy.) Possibly later when the relationships are better developed.

Oh, I know, and I plan to have and eat my cake as much as I possibly can. :) On one level it's actually pleasant, that I can squee over all the pairings--double the pleasure... ;) I'm just used to knowing who it is that I'd like to get together; usually shows that are this gay don't have girls I wanna cheer for. (Or if they do they're one-shots who leave town or die tragically or just are never seen again. Either way, not much investment.)
