Also: I had a conversation with [livejournal.com profile] caia_comica last night, which led to me thinking about Booster as a knight in golden glowing enchanted armor, and the picture just won't go away, which would be less of an issue if I could draw. Or if I was going to write it. Which I'm not. Especially since trying to translate Beetle into the same context is giving me a headache, even though Guy translates just fine with his magic sword. (Okay, so technically what's he's got is already a magic ring, but what's the point if people stay the same? Besides, I like visualizing Guy with a magic sword.) But just having Booster and Guy would be a disaster. So I'm not thinking about this. Really.

Yeah, "guy with a flying car and a death wish" doesn't really fit into that paradigm. He could be, like, hmmm. an alchemist or something. *flails* TECHNOMANCY.

I can see Ted as a magician, particularly an object-based magician--i.e., the one who creates, repairs and/or improves magic swords and armor--but then he sulks because he isn't in the actual combat. Which he's actually good at, so it doesn't seem quite fair. Perhaps I'm being unreasonable there; there are plenty of stories with combination magician/fighters, and maybe I could sort Ted out as one of them.

Translating the Bug would be depend on how faithful one wanted to be; I can't think of a genre way to keep it as group transport, but it could conceivably work as Ted's personal flying mount.

Essentially an artificer?

I do understand your combat/no combat issue with Ted. See, usually warmages are the ones who learn offensive spells, etc. and throw them during combat. Ted wouldn't work as someone who casts offensive spells as it seems that his magic would be entirely focus based. Therefore, you'd have to create a background that would allow him to learn both fighting skills as well as the magical knowledge allowing him to create magic items. At which point... eh.

Worryingly, this had in fact occurred to me. You could play Ice without changing her at all, including the relationships with Guy and Fire.

(As a female fantasy warrior, Fire's clothing sense would also translate without any problem.)

Right. I mean, okay, he could create those things for himself, but that's still kind of missing an element; Ted does use his gadgets as part of being the Blue Beetle, but he doesn't base his fighting style on them the way Guy and Booster do. Ted really wants to be able to hit people. And if he doesn't get to, he whines.

MAGIC CARRIAGE IN THE SKYYYYY.

I was actually thinking of a magic creature. A winged horse was actually the first thing that came to mind, but maybe something more reptilian (not a dragon, because that's too powerful). Strictly speaking it should be an actual bug, I know, but I don't care. Am not postulating giant insects.

On the other hand, a magic carriage might not be unworkable, either...

There's the possibility that Ted would have been a fighter previous to gaining knowledge of his magical abilities, that he sought out to learn magic in addition to a previously learned fighting style, or that for some reason, he was unable to use his magical abilities for a period of time previous to the story.

Also, man. No. Giant magical bug. It would be great. *giggling*

You can write it if there's no Ted, I just wouldn't like it as much. If there are other things before it on the list, that means everyone can contemplate how to work Ted in while you write all that other stuff. Or, you know, other people could start it or something. By other people I mean "people who are not me either" because I can't write high fantasy.

Also, man. No. Giant magical bug. It would be great. *giggling*

I CANNOT DEAL WITH GIANT BUGS. Giant bugs belong in horror movies, where they need to be shot as many times as it takes for their giant-bug-legs to stop twitching. They are absolutely not allowed to have heroes ride on them, because my brain flails at the ickiness.

(Okay, granted, Ted having a giant magical beetle would be wholly appropriate to the comedic tone appropriate to translating JLI. I still don't care. I don't do insects.)

I honestly have no idea. All I've read of early!Ted is what was in Secret Origins #2: Blue Beetle I & II, which totally glosses over, oh, Ted having a personality. So... I don't know. Hm. Possibly it's like. Oh hell. I don't know. Let me think on this one.

I can't write it if there's no Ted, because there would be no point in the idea. (To me.) It's not specific to Ted; I wouldn't be interested without Booster, either (he just happens to suit this genre a whole lot better, so it's not an issue). Fantasy JLI without either of them wouldn't even bear thinking about.

By other people I mean "people who are not me either" because I can't write high fantasy.

*grins* Well, it wouldn't be high fantasy any more than JLI was the Silver Age JLA. Comedic fantasy, I'm thinking, with them bickering straight through the entire process of killing the bandits/dragon/Dark Lord.

*googles* Several people say--and I don't know if this is stated somewhere or if they're just assuming--that after the death of Dan Garrett, Ted put himself through a rigorous course of physical training in order to become the Blue Beetle. *thinks about this* Was this touched on in #52, maybe, or the other issues where he gets overweight? I can't check till I get home...

It's touched on in Secret Origins. Dan dies and is all "carry on the tradition" and Ted is heartsick, and then goes and builds the bug and his gadgets and works out a lot.

Which, you know, say Ted is the third son or something in a relatively aristocratic line and gets essentially apprenticed to a mage (Dan Garrett) who dies before his training is complete, and Ted takes it upon himself to... that's about where my high fantasy "pulling shit out of my ass" ability gives in.

In other news, Scott transfers over to the fantasy story as a straight D&D-style rogue remarkably well.

*lightbulb goes off*

Dan is killed by someone with defenses against magic. (Or the ability to stop magic from working, either way.) Which makes him an easy target (comics-Dan mainly worked off a magic amulet, right?) and means that Ted is helpless to stop it--or protect himself, either--because he's got no physical skills. So, while not abandoning his magical studies (probably cutting back on them because he's only got so much time and energy, though), he applies himself to combat training for the first time, to make sure that never happens again. Yes?

In other news, Scott transfers over to the fantasy story as a straight D&D-style rogue remarkably well.

Hmm. I'm not sure--I have trouble seeing Scott stealing from people, which is one of the standard jobs for a rogue, and also I've never seen a rogue who dressed quite that eyecatchingly. ;) (Not that the characters would be wearing their standard costumes, of course, but it seems like some elements of the visuals ought to transfer.) But I don't have a better slot for him, either.

That makes... a lot of sense. Yay. Now we have Ted.

As for Scott, I was thinking from a purely skill-set angle (I also had the D&D class system, so forget I brought it up. :)), but you know. His background "Vaguely princey thing of some foreign country, kidnapped by a country hostile to his..." blah blah works pretty well in paradigm also.

Date: 2004-10-19 09:55 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] greenygal.livejournal.com
That's got the general idea, yeah--imagine if Terry Pratchett wrote the Lord of the Rings. (Actually, I'm not sure if these guys come out as more heroes on a quest or your standard D&D out-for-treasure adventurers--but they'd be closer to canon with the first. *considers the possibility of adapting Lord Maxwell*) They look all shining and heroic...and then they open their mouths. By the time Ice has finished lecturing Guy for killing that last rock troll when it obviously just wanted to run away, Booster has cornered the nearest girl to impress her with how heroic he is, and Guy has discovered that Beetle's done the magical equivalent of gluing his sword to its sheath...the impression kind of goes away. ;)

J'onn could be a good dragon!

On the other hand, what would he need the rest of the team for? (Okay, okay, that applies throughout JLI, and in fact a dragon would be less versatile than J'onn's actual skillset, although he has more of an option of Sudden Mass Death. But maybe he doesn't like inflicting Sudden Mass Death...)

Oh, his background could definitely be played without changing a thing (or, like you say, you might wanna tone it down, but he could be the son of a god without going out-genre) but I keep getting entertained by the idea that he's perfectly straightforward with people about his history and no one believes him. "Yeah, yeah, sure you're a prince in exile, Scott. And I'm Queen Claire's secret lover. Now are you coming with us to the tavern or not?" Of course, if he's got Barda standing right behind him, I don't imagine anyone would argue too hard with him about it...

J'onnDragon is very anti-Sudden Mass Death. It goes against his personal dragon moral code. He is a dragon who greatly enjoys cookies.

On the one hand, this amuses me like you wouldn't believe. On the other hand, fantasy does not have automatic opposition to killing, and while the heroes will certainly still have differing opinions on when it's appropriate or necessary, pitched battle will not be one of those times. So I'm trying to work out if I can plausibly have everyone else in the group merrily slaughtering orcs or whatever, while J'onn is refusing to use his capacity for Mass Death (which would have the same end result with less risk to his companions). It's a particular problem in the leader slot (and the idea of the dragon being in charge of everyone else really, really entertains me; I want to keep that if at all possible).

Also, I just. Yes. Lord Maxwell, who sends them on quests and oh. Goodness. I just. *tittering*

In order to get them the hell out of his kingdom? *snickers* Okay, that's maybe a little limited in the translation. At the very least I'm sure Max appreciates them bringing back fabulous magical relics that they acquired in the quests. Still...I'm sure there's always that edge of relief as they vanish across his borders. Somewhat lessened by the strong possibility they're going to rob/offend/assassinate the ruler of a neighboring country in the course of what they're doing...

the other key thing about the Bug is it is solar powered
because scarab pushing the sun around
so if you kept that and the blue you could drop the insectness and maybe pick up from a different sun myth a creature you like better, or just stick with the really big boat theme that most cultures seem to like. Or giant chariot. but usually those are really hard to steer and tend to burn up the countryside.

Two, you place it somewhere on the net--if you don't have webspace, you can set up an account at www.photobucket.com. Then you can put it in an LJ comment or post using the code "img src="http://www.example.com/image.jpg"/" with brackets instead of quotes at the beginning and end.
